Pakistan Parliament Joint Session Approves KP Emergency and Governor’s Rule

Joint Parliamentary Session Ratifies Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Emergency Proclamation

Pakistan’s Parliament convened a joint sitting on October 15, 2026, at Parliament House in Islamabad, chaired by National Assembly Speaker Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, and adopted two resolutions approving President Asif Ali Zardari’s October 11 proclamations of emergency and Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar described the emergency as a “last resort,” citing KP’s deteriorating security situation and the provincial government’s failure to address it. He noted that the constitution requires joint-session approval for such proclamations, a step completed after both houses had individually passed the measure the previous day.

Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar called for unified action against terrorism and the protection of fundamental rights for KP residents. Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi said federal authorities had made repeated attempts to bring the provincial government on board before resorting to emergency rule, while PPP leader Sherry Rehman urged political unity in the face of the ongoing security threat.

The sitting opened with prayers for victims of a roof collapse in Peshawar and was prorogued after the resolutions were passed. Read our previous article on Pakistani politics here.
