A New Type Of Protein Known As The ‘HELZ2’ To Re-write How High Cholesterol Treatment Can Be Treated
According to SciTechDaily, two researches at the UT Southwestern Medical Center have discovered a revolutionary method to treat high cholesterol and fatty liver. HELZ2 has been identified as an important regulator of the apolipoprotein B (APOB).
APOB is a gene necessary for producing apoB-proteins which assemble particles (known as lipoproteins) that move cholesterol and fats throughout the bloodstream.
These particles are responsible for major plaque build-up in the arteries as stated by senior author Zhao Zhang, Ph.D., Assistant Professor in UT Southwestern’s Center for the Genetics of Host Defense and of Internal Medicine.
Therefore, HELZ2 exists as an important regulator and a control point for how much cholesterol carrying particles enter the bloodstream. Synthesizing HELZ2 can be used to treat patients with high cholesterol and fatty liver.
