But in 1993, Honda did something even bolder. It took its already exceptional sports car, ripped out everything that made it comfortable, and turned it into something singular. Origins: Why Honda Built the Type R
The NSX Type R (internally coded NA1) was not born of market research or focus groups. It was born of a philosophy. Honda’s engineers, many of whom were directly involved in its Formula 1 programme believed that the standard NSX, brilliant as it was, had been softened too much for its intended driver. The leather seats, the Bose stereo, the air conditioning; these were all compromises against the ideal.
The Type R programme was led by chief engineer Shigeru Uehara, the same man responsible for the original NSX, and it was guided by a single principle: subtract everything that does not serve the act of driving, and make everything that remains sharper, lighter, and more precise. Honda called this approach “weight reduction by deletion”; not adding performance, but uncovering it.
The Weight Loss Programme
The standard NSX weighed approximately 1,370 kg. The Type R weighed 1,230 kg; a reduction of 140 kg, achieved without any exotic materials or major structural changes.
How? Honda removed the stereo, the spare tyre, the spare tyre jack, the air conditioning, the power steering reservoir, the trunk liner, the rear luggage shelf, the door trim padding, and a significant portion of the sound deadening material. The dashboard carpeting was replaced with a lighter mat. The wheels were forged aluminium, shaving rotating unsprung mass. The battery was relocated to behind the passenger seat to improve weight distribution.
But it was not just about removing weight. Every component that remained was examined and optimised. The seats were replaced with lightweight fixed-back carbon-fibre-backed Recaro buckets unique to the Type R, which weighed far less than the standard sports seats and held the driver far more firmly. The seat rails were titanium.
Honda also installed an underbody diffuser panel for improved high-speed stability, and the entire car received a fresh coat of Championship White paint; the only exterior colour available on the Type R, applied with slightly less thickness than a standard body colour to reduce weight further.
Suspension and Chassis Tuning
The Type R did not simply use a stiffer version of the standard NSX’s suspension. Honda went through the entire chassis, measuring and individually sorting components to tighter tolerances. The springs were 10% stiffer at the front and 20% stiffer at the rear. Damper settings were recalibrated. Ride height was lowered by 10mm.
The front anti-roll bar was deleted entirely; an unusual decision that improved front-end compliance on circuit and allowed more precise throttle-adjustable oversteer on corner exit. The rear anti-roll bar was uprated. Alignment was set to more aggressive camber and toe specifications than the standard car, optimising tyre contact patch during cornering.
The steering was rack-and-pinion with no power assistance; one of the last cars of its era to remove electric or hydraulic steering boost deliberately rather than due to cost-cutting and the result was a steering system with communication so detailed and honest that it became a benchmark for sports car engineers of the decade that followed.
The Engine: C30A Naturally Aspirated VTEC
The NSX Type R used the same 3.0-litre naturally aspirated V6 as the standard NSX; the C30A, but with significant modifications. Honda hand-polished the intake ports and combustion chambers, matched the port openings to the gasket faces, and balanced and blueprinted the engine to far tighter tolerances than production standard.
The result was an engine producing 270 PS (196 kW) at 7,300 rpm and 284 Nm of torque at 5,400 rpm; nominally the same output as the standard car’s figures, but with significantly improved throttle response, a sharper VTEC crossover at 5,800 rpm, and an eagerness to rev all the way to the 8,000 rpm redline that felt categorically different.
The gearbox was the same six-speed close-ratio unit used in the standard NSX, with a slightly shorter final drive. The differential was a mechanical limited-slip differential; a Torsen-type unit that significantly improved traction out of slow corners. The LSD was one of the most important handling differentiators between the Type R and the standard car.
Driving Experience: The Benchmark of Its Generation
Senna, who drove the original NSX during its development and whose feedback influenced its final character, famously told Honda that the car was good but not special enough. The Type R answered that criticism.
At speed, the NSX Type R communicates everything. The unassisted steering tells you precisely what the front tyres are doing at all times; how much grip they have, how the load is transferring, whether the surface is clean or dusty. In a 1990s era dominated by power-assisted setups that filtered sensation, this was extraordinary.
The lightweight body means the car responds instantly to driver inputs. There is no lag, no momentum to fight, no sense that the car is managing you. The Type R asks you to drive it properly, and it rewards you immediately when you do.
The engine’s V6 character; smooth at low revs, urgent through the midrange, then explosive above 5,800 rpm when VTEC opens, is one of the great naturally aspirated experiences in automotive history. In an era before turbocharged engines dominated performance cars, the Type R’s engine demonstrated that a naturally aspirated unit, developed with true engineering commitment, could produce sensation and involvement that forced induction almost never matches.
Production Numbers and Rarity
Honda produced approximately 483 NSX Type R units in the 1992โ1995 production run; a number that encompasses both the original 1992 model year car (which carried the 1993 model designation in most markets) and subsequent revisions. The car was sold exclusively in Japan during this period, making it a rare and largely unknown commodity in Western markets at the time of production.
A second-generation NSX Type R was produced in 2002โ2003, again in extremely limited numbers and again exclusively for Japan, but the 1993 original remains the definitive version in the eyes of most enthusiasts and historians.
Purchase Price Then and Now
When new, the NSX Type R was priced at approximately ยฅ9.38 million in Japan; roughly equivalent to $82,000 US at the time, a significant premium over the standard NSX at ยฅ8 million. In an era when a Ferrari 348 tb could be had for around $90,000 and a Porsche 911 Carrera RS for a similar amount, the Type R was priced within the bracket of genuine exotic competition.
Today, a clean 1993 NSX Type R in good condition commands between $350,000 and $600,000 USD at auction, with exceptional low-mileage examples exceeding $700,000. The car’s appreciation trajectory has been dramatic; particularly since 2018, when the broader collector market began to recognise the depth of Honda’s engineering achievement. Between 2015 and 2024, average auction realisations for the NA1 Type R increased by more than 400%, outpacing Ferrari, Porsche, and Lamborghini comparables from the same period in percentage terms.
The scarcity of the model, combined with its Japan-only sale history and the tendency of Japanese collectors to preserve rather than drive their cars, means that the global supply of good examples is genuinely limited.
Racing Achievements and Circuit Legacy
The NSX Type R was never officially campaigned by Honda in international motorsport as a factory effort, but its circuit credentials were established through relentless testing and the results of independent teams. At Suzuka Circuit; Honda’s home track, the Type R consistently posted lap times that embarrassed cars from rival manufacturers with more power and considerably more budget.
The car became the de facto tool for Japanese club racing in the Super GT predecessor series and in various national time attack championships throughout the 1990s, where its balance, braking, and driver feedback made it a weapon in the hands of skilled pilots.
Its influence on circuit driving culture in Japan was profound, and it contributed directly to the development philosophy Honda applied to subsequent Type R models; the EK9 Civic Type R, the DC2 Integra Type R, and the FD2 Civic Type R, all of which share the NSX’s commitment to weight reduction, high-revving natural aspiration, and driver feedback above all other metrics.
Challenges and Criticisms
The NSX Type R was not without its compromises. Removing the air conditioning from a mid-engined car with significant heat soak from the rear-mounted engine meant that interior temperatures in stop-start traffic could become genuinely uncomfortable. The suspension tune that made the car superb on smooth circuits could feel harsh and choppy on poorly surfaced Japanese roads. The fixed-back Recaro seats, while sublime for circuit driving, made ingress and egress awkward in the NSX’s low cockpit.
Some critics noted that the power output; 270 PS was modest by supercar standards even in 1993. The Ferrari 348 and Porsche 911 Turbo of the period offered comparable or greater power, and by the mid-1990s, the McLaren F1 and Ferrari F40 existed in a completely different performance universe. The NSX Type R was never the fastest car of its era in a straight line.
But this criticism misses the point entirely. The Type R was never conceived as the fastest car. It was conceived as the most honest car, the most direct, communicative, and rewarding driver’s tool money could buy. By that measure, few cars of any era have beaten it.
Legacy and Standing Today
The Honda NSX Type R (NA1) is now widely regarded as one of the greatest driver’s cars ever made; not despite its power output but because of its integrity. It appears on virtually every authoritative list of the best sports cars of the 1990s, and its influence on Honda’s broader Type R philosophy is traceable through every hot Honda built since.
More importantly, it changed the conversation about what a supercar needed to be. It demonstrated that a car built by engineers who genuinely cared about driving could compete with, and in driver engagement outperform, cars from manufacturers with decades of exotic car heritage.
Every gram Honda removed from the NSX Type R was a statement: that in a sports car, the driver is the point. Thirty years on, that statement has never been surpassed.
