According to Dawn, heavy monsoon rainfall hit the twin cities of Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Friday morning, August 15, 2026, providing relief after three days of hot and humid weather by dropping the temperature to 30 degrees Celsius while simultaneously swamping low-lying areas in a slushy mess that left residents waking up fearing flash floods.
The Meteorological Department recorded 65mm of rainfall at Saidpur, 62mm at the Airport, 19mm at Zero Point, 18mm each at Golra and Bokra, and 9mm at Islamabad. In Rawalpindi, 18mm fell at Shamsabad, 14mm at New Kattarian, 12mm at Pirwadhai, 10mm at Gawalmandi and 8mm at Chaklala. The rain ran from early morning until around 9am, after which skies cleared by Friday prayers.
WASA Managing Director Azizullah Khan told Dawn the Leh Nullah rose to 7.5 feet at Kattarian and five feet at Gawalmandi, but the situation remained under control due to pre-monsoon dredging. However, a resident of Gawalmandi named Nisar Ali said the Rawalpindi Cantonment Board had done nothing to clean nullahs and drains.
The Met Office warned that Saturday’s rainfall could cause urban flooding in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Mardan, Swabi, Gujranwala, Gujrat, Sialkot and Lahore, while landslides were possible in Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan and other northern areas.
