According to Al Jazeera, Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Imran Khan, 73, was transferred early on August 20, 2026 from Rawalpindi’s Adiala jail to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad under heavy security; hundreds of police and paramilitary personnel deployed around the facility. Khan spent a few hours at the hospital before being returned to Adiala.
Information Minister Attaullah Tarar confirmed the visit on X, stating that a specialised medical team including a cardiologist, ophthalmologist and physician examined Khan and “declared him medically fit.” Khan’s sister Uzma Khan was present throughout the visit.
The hospital transfer followed a Supreme Court order issued on August 18 directing authorities to move Khan to hospital within two days. The court said an independent medical board including his personal physician must conduct the assessment. The government had challenged the order but completed transfer preparations by Thursday.
The court’s directive followed a report submitted Monday by Adiala jail’s superintendent detailing an August 10 cardiac assessment that recorded fluctuating blood pressure and anxiety; attributed to Khan’s restricted contact with his family. Courts had declined two similar requests to transfer Khan to hospital since February.
Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023, initially convicted in a state gifts case. He and his wife Bushra Bibi have since been convicted in several other cases. Khan and PTI deny all charges, calling them politically motivated.
Three years in prison. A Supreme Court order the government tried to challenge. A few hours in hospital. Then back to Adiala.
