NDMA Issues Heavy Rain And Flash Flood Alert For Islamabad Rawalpindi KP And Gilgit-Baltistan: Alert Covers Islamabad Rawalpindi Attock Chakwal Jhelum Murree Galiyat From September 2 To Saturday KP Districts Including Dir Swat Peshawar Mardan Covered Glacial Lake Outburst Flood Risk Identified In Ghizer Hunza Nagar Shigar Gilgit Skardu Neelum Valley Public Advised To Avoid Rivers Streams And Install Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App
According to Radio Pakistan/NDMA, the National Disaster Management Authority issued a heavy rainfall alert on September 1, 2026, covering Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Murree, Galiyat and adjoining areas from September 2 until Saturday, warning that heavy rainfall may cause flash flooding in urban areas and flooding and landslides in mountainous regions.
Heavy rainfall is also forecast for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa across a wide swathe of districts, including Dir, Swat, Buner, Malakand, Shangla, Battagram, Kohistan, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Nowshera, Swabi, Mardan and Peshawar. In mountainous areas of KP, particularly Chitral, Upper and Lower Dir, Swat, Shangla, Kohistan, Mansehra, Buner and adjoining areas, the NDMA warns of simultaneous flash flooding and landslide risk.
Separately, the NDMA issued a potential flood alert for Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Azad Jammu and Kashmir due to the possible outburst of glacial lakes. GLOF risk has increased as ongoing monsoon rains and rising temperatures accelerate glacier melt. The vulnerable areas identified include Ghizer, Hunza, Nagar, Shigar, Gilgit, Rondu, Diamer, Astore, Skardu, Ghanche, Kharmang and Neelum Valley.
The NDMA urged citizens to avoid unnecessary movement near glacial rivers, streams and other hazardous locations, stay informed through district administration advisories and use the Pak NDMA Disaster Alert App for real-time warnings.
Pakistan’s north is beautiful and deadly in monsoon season. The GLOF threat makes it more so.
