Punjab has taken a bold step toward modernising public education, approving a sweeping curriculum overhaul that will introduce Artificial Intelligence as a subject from Class I to Class XII across all government schools in the province. The Express Tribune
The reforms were presented by the Punjab Education Curriculum, Training and Assessment Authority (PECTAA) at a meeting chaired by Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif. The package goes well beyond AI: textbook volumes will be reduced by 25% to move away from rote learning, QR codes will be embedded in textbooks linking students to video lessons, and five core subjects; English, Mathematics, Urdu, Social Studies, and Early Childhood Education, have undergone structural changes.
The government has set a March deadline for printing revised textbooks. Authorities must simultaneously develop age-appropriate AI syllabi, establish dedicated laboratories, and train teachers before the rollout begins.
The initiative also includes mental health provisions, with teacher training and online counselling for students, and proposed legislation to eliminate corporal punishment in schools through “discipline corners.”
Educationists have flagged that reducing textbook size only delivers results if examination demands shift too and that QR code features depend on reliable smartphone and internet access across Punjab.
