NASA Perseverance Discovers Three Ancient Water Episodes on Mars Reshaping the Search for Life

Mars Constantly Throws Surprises: Perseverance Finds Groundwater, Lake Interaction, and Hydrothermal Activity in Jezero Crater’s Margin Unit

NASA’s Perseverance rover has uncovered compelling evidence of three distinct episodes of ancient water activity on Mars, fundamentally reshaping scientists’ understanding of the Red Planet’s watery past. The findings, published in Communications Earth & Environment and led by Candice Bedford of Purdue University, examined over 185 bedrock targets across Jezero Crater’s Margin Unit. ScienceDaily

Contrary to initial expectations of sedimentary lake deposits, the rover found that ancient igneous rocks experienced three separate water interactions: carbon dioxide-rich groundwater produced carbonates within rock fractures; a second episode potentially linked to the ancient Jezero lake left elevated silica deposits below the waterline; and a third phase of hydrothermal activity created 10-inch-thick mineral veins containing calcium sulfate and fluorite; indicating hot volcanic water circulated through the rocks.

The significance extends beyond geology. Olivine-water reactions produce hydrogen, a viable energy source for microbial life. Both carbonate and silica minerals can preserve traces of ancient biological activity. Perseverance’s SuperCam laser instrument, firing from up to 6.5 metres away, was central to the analysis. Mars, Bedford noted, “constantly throws surprises.”
