Bugatti Destrier Is A 1,578bhp Road-Going Reimagining Of The Bolide. The W16 Lives On In Sapphire Celeste

Bugatti Destrier: Third Car From Bugatti’s Solitaire Programme Transforms Track-Only Bolide Into A One-Off Moving Sculpture With Carbon Monocoque Leather Nubuck Interior And Uninterrupted Sculptural Bodyside. Pebble Beach Debut August 16

According to Top Gear, Bugatti has unveiled the Destrier — the third car from its Solitaire bespoke programme; reimagining the track-only Bolide as a 1,578bhp road-going work of art, named after the strongest type of medieval knight’s horse.

The Destrier keeps the Bolide’s 8.0-litre W16 engine and carbon fibre monocoque but sheds all aerodynamic appendages in favour of pure sculptural form. The result is an uninterrupted body line flowing from front to rear; wide, pinched, swollen and shrunken, sitting low and wide. Wheels grow from the Bolide’s 18-inch track units to 20 and 21-inch road items.

This particular one-off wears an exclusive colour, Sapphire Celeste; a deep midnight purpley-blue flecked with sparkles, surrounded by polished aluminium and exposed carbon fibre. Inside, the focus shifts entirely from the Bolide’s raw functionality: leather, nubuck and 3D-knitted textile in warm brown, special stitching, hammered brightwork and a tiny French flag replace the race car’s sparse interior.

“Destrier is not a car you understand with your head, it is a car you feel with your heart,” said design boss Frank Heyl. The car makes its public debut at Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance on August 16.

Bugatti took its most extreme car and asked what happens if you free it from downforce. The answer is Destrier. Check out our previous coverage of automotive on The Trusted Times.
