According to Bloomberg and TechCrunch, Google has rolled out Android 17, an update centred on multitasking, social media video creation and gaming, while laying groundwork for agentic AI capabilities arriving later this year. The initial rollout reaches Pixel devices first, with other hardware brands following over the coming months.
The headline feature is Bubbles, which lets users long-press any app to collapse it into a floating, draggable window that stays accessible over other apps, with foldable devices gaining a dedicated docked bubble bar for resizable, desktop-like windows.
Screen Reactions lets creators simultaneously record their screen and selfie camera for reaction-style videos shareable on TikTok, YouTube and Instagram, built directly into Android. Security improvements include a “Mark as Lost” feature in Find Hub, Live Threat Detection, and PIN-based content filtering that no longer requires linking a Google account.
Gemini Intelligence, Google’s agentic AI platform, remains unready, expected “later this summer” on select advanced devices including the Pixel 11 series, following Apple’s own AI and Siri improvements unveiled the previous week.
