Snap Specs: Announced By CEO Evan Spiegel At AWE, Specs Deliver A 51-Degree Diagonal Field Of View At Just 132 Grams, A 7-Millisecond Motion-To-Photon Latency Described As The Lowest Ever Publicly Stated For A 6DoF XR Product, And Electrochromic Lenses That Shift From Clear To Fully Opaque In 10 Seconds
According to UploadVR, Snap has officially revealed and opened preorders for Specs, fully standalone true AR glasses shipping this fall for $2195. CEO Evan Spiegel announced the launch at AWE, fulfilling a promise made at last year’s expo and beating Meta, Apple and Google to market with consumer-ready true AR hardware capable of placing virtual objects directly into the real world.
Specs deliver a 51-degree diagonal field of view while weighing just 132 grams for the smaller frame, a major leap from Snap’s bulky 226-gram Spectacles developer kit. The glasses use proprietary in-house LCoS displays capable of 16 million colours per pixel, two unspecified Qualcomm Snapdragon chips, and achieve 7 milliseconds of motion-to-photon latency. Electrochromic lenses automatically tint from clear to fully opaque sunglasses in just 10 seconds.
Running Snap OS, Specs support sandboxed apps called Lenses built via Lens Studio, with first-party experiences including web browsing, navigation, and real-time translation included out of the box. Preorders require a $200 refundable deposit, with the remaining $1995 due at shipping.
