Prime Minister of Pakistan, Shehbaz Sharif Announced ‘Austerity Measures’ on March 9th, 2026 to Combat Fuel Crisis Amid US-Israel War on Iran as Public Sector to Embrace for Salary Cuts, Fuel Allowances Cuts and Distance Learning.
‘Austerity Measures’ are political-economic policies aimed at reducing government budget deficits by cutting on spending. Such measures are taken during emergencies and crisis and are conservative in nature. This means that government employee salary cuts, limiting allowances for fuel, limiting transportation and other financially limiting factors are put in place in order to reallocate the budget towards risk mitigation and aversion.
In the case of Pakistan, according to Dawn News, Prime Minister of Pakistan Shehbaz Sharif announced similar ‘austerity measures’. Key points include: 50 per cent cut in fuel allowances for official vehicles for the next two months (with the exemption of ambulances and public buses), 60 per cent of official vehicles to be grounded in all provincial and government establishments for the next two months, salaries of members of federal and provincial legislatures to be cut by 25 per cent for the next two months.
Moreover, the biggest takeaway is that 50 per cent of staff in the public sector is instructed to work from home. Workplaces in the public sector will open for 4 days a week. All Higher Educational Institutions are ordered to issue a two week school break with the classes ordered to be shifted online in order to reduce transportation and fuel costs.
