Washington Post reports that Russian-installed authorities in Crimea declared a state of emergency on June 26, after Ukraine launched one of the largest drone attacks of the war, with Russia’s Defense Ministry confirming it intercepted 660 Ukrainian drones overnight across 13 regions including Crimea, Moscow, and the Black and Azov seas.

The attack surpassed Ukraine’s previous largest assault of 2026; 556 drones on May 17, and struck two military vessels and several air defense systems in the Kerch region. Russian authorities halted all fuel sales to civilians in Crimea before declaring the emergency. Ukrainian Defence Minister Mikhailo Fedorov said Kyiv hopes to turn Crimea “into an island,” isolating it from Russia entirely. Zelenskyy announced a “40-day influence operation” aimed at compelling Russia to end the war.
