France 2027 Presidential Race Thrown Into Chaos
France’s 2027 presidential election is descending into disorder months before campaigning formally begins. A single week has exposed the full range of vulnerabilities threatening the country’s political landscape: Russian disinformation, judicial disqualification, left-wing fragmentation, and street protests. A Russia-linked operation dubbed “Matryoshka” has been circulating fabricated content targeting two centre-right frontrunners; former Prime Ministers Gabriel Attal and Édouard Philippe, with forged documents and manipulated audio designed to damage their credibility ahead of primaries.
Marine Le Pen’s political future remains suspended. The National Rally leader has been handed a five-year ban from public office following her conviction in the EU funds fraud case, with an appeal still pending. If upheld, she is constitutionally barred from the ballot.
The French left is equally fractured. A United Left primary scheduled for October 11 has attracted only minor-party figures; Tondelier, Ruffin, and Massard with LFI, the Socialists, and the Communist Party all declining to participate.
Student protests erupted on September 28 over education funding cuts, adding another layer of social tension. France has cycled through three prime ministers since 2024. With over 30 candidates already declared, the 2027 race is shaping up as the most chaotic in modern French republican history.
