British counter-terrorism authorities have charged two Iranian nationals with plotting an attack against Manchester’s Jewish community, timed to coincide with Yom Kippur; the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. NBC News

Rahman Salehi, 34, and Salam Ahmadyan, 36, were arrested on September 20, 2026; the eve of Yom Kippur and formally charged on October 3. Both face charges of preparing to commit or assisting an act of terrorism in England.

Prosecutors allege the men attempted to acquire components for an improvised explosive device and conducted reconnaissance on potential targets within Manchester’s Jewish community. Investigators also identified alleged contact with an overseas third party potentially based in Iran.

UK Home Secretary Shabana Mahmood condemned the alleged plot, stating: “They target our Jewish communities and try to silence their critics overseas, often through proxies.”

The charges come amid heightened security concerns in Britain, including a separate alleged Iranian-linked plot targeting RAF Fairford air base, and one year after a deadly terrorist attack on a Manchester synagogue in October 2025 that killed two people. Iran has denied involvement in all alleged plots.
