Iran Expands Maritime War: Tankers Hit Beyond Hormuz in Gulf of Oman

Iran Strikes Tankers Beyond the Strait of Hormuz, Signalling an Expanding Campaign

Iran appears to be widening its maritime campaign beyond the Strait of Hormuz, with two tanker attacks reported in early October 2026 raising fresh alarm over global energy security. Euro News

On October 8, the UK Maritime Trade Operations agency confirmed that the tanker Acers, flagged in Antigua and Barbuda, was struck by multiple projectiles roughly 51 nautical miles north of Qatar; the first such attack in that area in over six months. A day later, a fire broke out aboard the Marshall Islands-flagged tanker Dhalgout near Fujairah in the Gulf of Oman. US military aircraft, including P-8A patrol planes and KC-46 tankers, were confirmed in the vicinity.

No official Iranian claim was made, but IRGC-linked media implied Tehran had extended operations beyond the strait. Iran’s Acting Defence Minister Majid Ebn ol-Reza warned on X: “The distance between you and us is determined by our missiles.” Senior military adviser Yahya Rahim Safavi threatened to extend the conflict “as far as the Indian Ocean.”

The Strait of Hormuz has been effectively closed since late February when the US-Iran war began, disrupting roughly one-fifth of global oil and gas shipments. The attacks signal Iran’s campaign may now be targeting wider shipping lanes with no end to the conflict in sight.
