Hurricane Isaias Makes Landfall Near Florida Panhandle Category 1 Brings Storm Surge Threat

Hurricane Isaias Hits Florida Panhandle With 90 MPH Winds and Dangerous Storm Surge

Hurricane Isaias, the first hurricane of the 2026 Atlantic season, made landfall Friday evening near the Alabama-Florida state line, striking close to Destin in the Florida Panhandle. The storm arrived unusually late in a season that had been remarkably quiet due to a strong El Niño pattern. NBC Miami

At landfall, Isaias carried sustained winds of 90 mph, maintaining Category 1 intensity. The National Hurricane Center warned residents across the Florida Panhandle, southern Alabama, and southern Mississippi of potentially life-threatening storm surge alongside heavy rain and destructive gusts expected to persist through Saturday.

Florida Governor activated 175 Florida State Guard members and approximately 5,000 National Guard personnel ahead of the storm’s arrival. An additional 6,000 utility workers were pre-positioned across the region to respond to widespread power outages. Images of destruction have already emerged from coastal communities.

Despite its late-season arrival, Isaias underscores how a single storm can upend an otherwise quiet year and how El Niño years are never truly safe until November 30.
