Amnesty South Asia Director Lassee Says Authorities Have Systematically Denied Imran Right To Fair Trial, Subjected Him To Prolonged Solitary Confinement And Blocked Family Access For Over Eight Months
According to The Express Tribune, Amnesty International called on the Pakistani government to release former Prime Minister Imran Khan as he approaches the completion of three full years in detention — imprisoned since August 5, 2023 at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi.
Amnesty International South Asia Acting Regional Director Isabelle Lassee said authorities had “systematically denied” Imran the right to a fair trial, subjected him to prolonged solitary confinement, and limited access to medical care and legal counsel. Both Imran and his wife Bushra Bibi Khan have been denied regular access to lawyers since December 2025, and Imran has not met his family for more than eight months. His vision has reportedly deteriorated significantly.
Amnesty urged the government to unconditionally restore both Imran and Bushra Bibi’s right to see their family and lawyers, provide adequate medical care, and end what it called their “unlawful” solitary confinement. The statement also urged authorities to allow peaceful protest around the anniversary and avoid crackdowns on PTI supporters.
Separately, UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Alice Jill Edwards last week expressed concern that Imran was being denied proper medical care for serious conditions requiring treatment. Imran faces a 17-year sentence in the Toshakhana-II case alongside pending ATA trials.
