According to Reuters, Pakistan’s Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir will visit Tehran on Monday, August 24, after Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei confirmed the visit on Sunday, describing it as a continuation of Pakistan’s efforts to bring peace and security to the region.
Two Pakistani government sources confirmed Munir’s visit to Reuters. The first said Iran and Pakistan were in direct contact. A second source said the talks would also address recent developments in the conflict, including US President Donald Trump’s threat of tougher sanctions on Iran.
Pakistan has taken on a mediator role in negotiations between Iran and the US aimed at ending the war which began with US and Israeli strikes on Iran in February 2026. Munir previously represented Pakistan at a quadrilateral meeting involving the United States, Iran, Pakistan and Qatar at the Burgenstock resort in Switzerland on June 21.
Egypt and Iran also held separate discussions on Saturday on efforts to bring Tehran and Washington back to the negotiating table. Separately, two US Air Force tanker aircraft departed Bulgaria’s Bezmer air base after nearly a month of deployment that had angered Tehran.
Pakistan is the only country both sides are willing to talk to. That is either a remarkable diplomatic asset or an indication of how far apart the principals remain.
