Glioblastoma – An Advanced And Aggressive Form Of Brain Tumor Is Found To Hijack Fructose Metabolism To Evade The Immune System

According to Technology Networks, scientists at the Northwestern University discovered how brain tumors evade the immune system.

They identified the sugar pathway as a driver of immune suppression in brain tumors. In addition to this, scientists have also discovered that blocking fructose metabolism in the specialized cells may improve immunotherapy and patient outcomes, thus allowing the immune system to fend off tumor better.

In separate mouse models, scientists have discovered that by removing the fructose transporter, the tumor simply didn’t grow. This was according to them, a far more dramatic response than they could have previously anticipated.

According to National Brain Tumor Society, Glioblastoma is one of the most common forms of aggressive brain tumor found in adults and has a five-year survival rate of less than 7%. This medical discovery will therefore help save more lives and stop tumors from advancing to their life-threatening forms.
