For seven hundred years, readers have treated Dante’s Inferno as a spiritual journey through the afterlife. A new study published by the European Geosciences Union argues it may also be the earliest known thought experiment in planetary impact physics.
Timothy Burbery of Marshall University proposes that Dante portrayed Satan not as a purely spiritual figure but as a massive high-speed impactor striking the Southern Hemisphere and driving straight toward Earth’s core. In this interpretation, the force of the collision pushed land outward into the Northern Hemisphere, carving out Hell as a giant impact crater reaching upward from below, while displaced material simultaneously formed Mount Purgatory as a towering central peak on the opposite side of the planet.
The scale Dante imagined lines up with the largest known impacts in Earth’s history. Burbery compares the event described in Inferno to the Chicxulub impact linked to the extinction of the dinosaurs, and draws a further comparison between Satan and the Hoba meteorite, a 60-ton space rock that survived entry largely intact.
The famous nine circles of Hell get a new reading in this framework. Rather than viewing them solely as symbolic layers representing categories of sin, Burbery argues they closely resemble the terraced ring structures seen in massive impact basins on the Moon, Venus and other planetary bodies across the solar system.
The study also suggests Dante anticipated concepts connected to terminal velocity and crustal penetration, and connects these ideas to the non-Euclidean geometry explored in the Paradiso, arguing that Dante’s broader cosmology contains advanced physical concepts embedded within its literary architecture.
The implications reach beyond literary scholarship. Burbery argues that ancient stories and myths can preserve genuine observations about natural disasters and cosmic threats long before scientific frameworks exist to explain them. Dante, writing at a time when Aristotelian doctrine still portrayed the heavens as perfect and unchanging, may have helped shift Western thought toward accepting that celestial objects can physically reshape Earth.
Dante’s Inferno remains one of the greatest literary achievements in human history. It may also be the world’s oldest paper on impact physics.
