Google DeepMind Partners With A24 And Invests $75 Million In First AI Filmmaking Deal

Google DeepMind: Demis Hassabis Says Building AI Tools Directly With Artists Is The Only Way To Get It Right

According to Google, DeepMind and A24 are announcing a first-of-its-kind partnership focused on research, pairing a world-leading AI lab with the industry’s most filmmaker-forward studio to help artists develop new workflows and techniques.

The investment is approximately $75 million, tied to their AI deal and not a capital raise. This marks the first time Google has taken a stake in a movie studio, though it already owns YouTube through Alphabet.

The collaboration creates a deep research and development partnership spanning multiple projects over time. By anchoring DeepMind’s innovations directly within the creative process, A24 and its filmmakers can help shape new technology in service of their vision and expand their storytelling possibilities, while providing DeepMind with invaluable feedback from leading artists.

“We believe the best way to develop tools that empower artists is to work directly with them,” said Google DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis. “By collaborating with filmmakers and industry leaders like A24 from the beginning, we can build new AI features to support artists in authentic, meaningful storytelling that helps enable their creative vision.”

While the initial focus is on bridging cutting-edge technology with next-generation entertainment, the specific goals and creative milestones will evolve over time as both teams work side-by-side to test, iterate and build.

This matters because the AI-in-Hollywood debate has largely been theoretical. A studio with A24’s creative reputation building directly with DeepMind is a different kind of signal entirely.
