The Strait of Hormuz crisis is quietly rewriting Pakistan’s energy relationships. And Kuwait just moved to the front of that conversation.
Pakistan and Kuwait agreed on May 12, 2026 to explore new opportunities around building strategic petroleum storage in Pakistan and enhance cooperation in refining for the mutual benefit of both nations.
The development emerged during a meeting between Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik and Kuwait’s Ambassador Nassar Abdulrahman Jasser Almutairi in Islamabad, where both sides discussed regional developments and energy cooperation.
Malik expressed gratitude to the Kuwaiti government for facilitating the safe dispatch of the vessel Khairpur, which transported approximately 45,000 tonnes of diesel and 10,000 tonnes of jet fuel from Kuwait to Pakistan under special approvals, following disruptions caused by the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
Nassar Abdulrahman hailed Pakistan’s peace efforts in the region, saying Islamabad had proven itself through its responsible stance and was being viewed with a renewed and elevated status in the international community.
Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb had previously told Reuters in April that the supply shocks caused by the Middle East war sent a clear signal that Pakistan needed to accelerate its push for strategic petroleum reserves and renewable energy. “When you go through a supply shock like this, it sends a very clear view that we need to accelerate these journeys,” he said.
