Micron Under Pressure as CXMT’s New G5 DRAM Chip Narrows the Gap With Global Memory Leaders
China’s largest DRAM maker, ChangXin Memory Technologies (CXMT), is accelerating its challenge to Micron, Samsung, and SK Hynix and the market is taking notice. BARRON’S
In September 2026, CXMT announced its fifth-generation DRAM platform, G5, entering mass production at an 11.95nm process node using quadruple-exposure technology. The company claims the platform approaches “the world’s most advanced” memory manufacturing. Two new LPDDR5X mobile DRAM chips built on G5 feature 24-gigabit capacity; 50% higher than CXMT’s previous generation, with improved energy efficiency and more dies per wafer.
The advances compound pressure already felt after CXMT’s landmark IPO in late July 2026, which raised $8.5 billion on Shanghai’s STAR Market at an $85 billion valuation; one of the largest semiconductor listings ever on a mainland Chinese exchange. Micron’s stock dropped roughly 8% on the IPO day.
CXMT now holds approximately 11% of global DRAM market share, against Micron’s 25%. It trails the top three by two to three technology generations but is closing that gap faster than analysts initially projected. Analysts project CXMT’s share could reach 15% by 2030 — a figure many consider conservative given its current trajectory.
