Space.com reports that NASA is spending $30 million on the Swift Boost mission, launching June 30 on the final Pegasus XL rocket, to rescue the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory before heightened solar-storm drag pulls it below 186 miles altitude by October and into an unrecoverable reentry trajectory.

Swift Has No Onboard Engines and Will Fall From Its 375-Mile Orbit Unless Katalyst’s Fridge-Sized Link Spacecraft Can Grapple and Reboost It

Arizona-based startup Katalyst Space, selected just nine months ago in September 2025, built its Link spacecraft; roughly the size of a refrigerator, equipped with three ion engines and three robotic arms in an unprecedented timeline. After launch, Link will spend weeks in orbit testing systems before attempting rendezvous, grappling Swift, and spending up to three months slowly raising the observatory’s orbit to guarantee at least five more years of science operations.

Swift Is the Only Observatory That Can Pivot to a Gamma-Ray Burst in Minutes. No Other Telescope, Including Webb or Hubble, Can Match It

Launched in 2004 for $250 million on a planned two-year mission, Swift remains irreplaceable as a rapid-response gamma-ray burst hunter, able to repoint across the sky in minutes versus two days for Hubble. It helped confirm that neutron-star mergers forge gold and platinum, and in 2022 detected the Brightest Of All Time gamma-ray burst.
