NASA Perseverance Finds Organic Carbon: Discovery Connects With Curiosity’s 2014 Gale Crater Find 3,500km Away, Hinting Life May Have Been Widespread

According to Science News, NASA’s Perseverance rover has detected organic carbon intricately woven into rocks at the Bright Angel formation in Jezero Crater, not merely sitting on the surface but embedded within the rock’s geological history, using the SHERLOC instrument across four targets on three separate rocks.

Scientists also found traces of ferrous iron phosphate and iron sulfide alongside the carbon matter; mineral structures that on Earth are typically associated with microbial activity, though researchers are careful not to claim discovery of life.

The organic carbon could have arrived via ancient meteorites, cosmic dust, or been produced by purely abiological hydrothermal reactions, all possibilities that must be ruled out before any biological origin can be claimed.

What makes this finding striking is its distance from Curiosity’s 2014 organic detection in Gale Crater, more than 3,500 kilometres away. If life ever existed on Mars, those two separate detections could indicate it may have been geographically widespread rather than an isolated anomaly.

Perseverance has cached 30 samples for possible return to Earth, including a rock core called Sapphire Canyon that contains the organic carbon; the only instruments capable of truly characterising it now lie in laboratories on this planet.
