Fifty-three years after a civil war tore them apart, Pakistan and Bangladesh are choosing a different conversation.
Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met Bangladesh’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam in Dhaka on May 10, 2026, where he told her that Pakistan offers vast opportunities for investment across multiple sectors.
The visit carries significant weight given the history. Bangladesh seceded from Pakistan following a bloody civil war in 1971, an event that long cast a shadow over bilateral ties. Relations began warming after former Bangladeshi premier Sheikh Hasina was ousted via protests in 2024.
Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in trade, business and culture, and decided to increase mutual exchanges of delegations to promote commercial and cultural relations. Pakistan’s mediation efforts in the ongoing US-Iran conflict were also discussed.
In a separate meeting, Naqvi and Salahuddin Ahmed signed an agreement to prevent illegal drug transportation and smuggling across both countries, alongside a decision to form a joint working group between their respective interior ministries.
