According to The New York Times, United24 Media and Russia Matters, Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine entered its 1,568th consecutive day on June 10, 2026 — matching and then surpassing the exact duration of the First World War, which lasted 1,568 days from its declaration on July 28, 1914 to the Armistice on November 11, 1918, spanning four years, three months, and fourteen days.
The milestone lands against a battlefield picture that bears an uncomfortable structural resemblance to the war it has now outlasted. Ukraine’s Commander-in-Chief Oleksandr Syrskyi reported that Russian forces suffered approximately 141,500 casualties in the first months of 2026 alone, including more than 83,000 killed.
Russian average monthly troop losses have exceeded 35,000. The cost in soldiers per square kilometre of territory captured has risen sharply; from 67 in October 2025 to 179 by April 2026, as Ukrainian drone warfare increasingly forces Russian infantry into exposed kill zones. The Economist described 2026 as “reminiscent of 1916,” with Russia losing hundreds of fighting-age men weekly to seize patches of land the size of small parks.
On the Ukrainian side, April 2026 saw the country’s highest monthly strike rate on Russian energy infrastructure since December, targeting 20 refineries and export terminals, cutting Russia’s crude-processing rate to its lowest level in over sixteen years.
Ukrainian drones have struck within 3.5 miles of the Kremlin, and 70 percent of Russia’s population now lives within the 1,200-mile operational range of Ukraine’s drone fleet.
European military analyst Franz-Stefan Gady assessed that “Ukraine is arguably in a better military position in May 2026 than it was in May 2025.” Yet the front lines remain effectively frozen, US attention has been diverted by the Iran conflict, and Putin has signalled readiness to escalate further.
