Sony Patents PS6 Touchscreen Controller That Replaces All Buttons and Sticks With a Display

Sony’s PS6 Patent Reveals a Fully Touch-Based Controller No Sticks, No Buttons, Just a Screen

Sony Interactive Entertainment has filed a US patent revealing a radical new controller concept for the PlayStation 6: a device with no mechanical buttons, no analog sticks, and no D-pad. Instead, the entire front face becomes a single touchscreen display that renders all controls in software. Phone World

The patent describes a controller where players can reposition virtual sticks, resize action buttons, and adjust button spacing to suit their grip. Layouts for specific games could load automatically when the controller is picked up. The design also supports switching between PlayStation’s symmetrical button layout and Xbox’s asymmetrical arrangement, all in software.

Two built-in sensors add intelligence to the surface: a pressure sensor to detect how hard a player is pressing, and a heat sensor to map finger positions. Together, they aim to distinguish deliberate inputs from a resting thumb.

Sony frames the design as an accessibility improvement, accommodating different hand sizes without requiring a custom-built peripheral. However, critics note that the design sacrifices the tactile feedback that many players, including those with low vision or limited motor control depend on. The patent also raises questions about compatibility with PS5’s celebrated haptics and adaptive triggers.

Sony has not announced a PS6 controller. This remains a patent, not a product plan but it signals where Sony’s R&D thinking is heading. Read our previous article on Gaming and Technology related news here.
