According to Press Information Department (PID), Pakistan Government has approved specialized ro-ro transshipment operations. According to the latest developments, the latest initiative is set to open new avenues for the automotive logistics sector, reducing handling times. The initiative will position Pakistan as a key node in regional vehicle distribution networks.
The strategic move designed to turn the country into a regional logistics hub, will boost port revenues, increase foreign exchange earnings, and create jobs which will benefit Pakistan’s economy.
Moreover, by allowing Ro-Ro vessels to handle vehicle transshipment (cars, SUVs, wheeled cargo), Pakistan positions itself to capture a larger share of regional trade routes, particularly as Middle East conflict disrupts traditional Gulf shipping lanes. The only question now is whether Port Qasim can cater to the ever-increasing demands.
If not, are there appropriate measures in place to transform Port Qasim into a sustainable maritime trading hub for Pakistan? The questions regarding budgets, policies and implementations will soon be raised and the onus is on the Pakistan Government to ensure that Port Qasim appropriately handles the ever-increasing demands as well as the specialized Ro-Ro transshipment vessels.
