It is over for Spirit Airlines. No more flights. No more customer service. Just a brief statement on a website and 17,000 people suddenly out of a job.
According to the CNN, Spirit Airlines announced the immediate wind-down of all operations on May 2, 2026, cancelling every scheduled flight and shutting down customer service with immediate effect, the first major US airline shutdown since Midway Airlines collapsed after September 11, 2001.
The final blow came from jet fuel. Jet fuel prices nearly doubled after the start of the war in Iran, choking off 20 percent of global oil supply. Spirit, which depends entirely on bargain hunters, could not raise fares enough to survive the surge.
A last-minute rescue deal with the Trump administration fell apart when a key group of creditors refused to accept terms that would have handed the government a controlling stake in the airline.
Around 9,000 flights and 1.8 million seats were on Spirit’s schedule through the end of May alone. Passengers who paid cash have now effectively become creditors in a bankruptcy court.
Removing Spirit’s 2 percent of domestic US flights will push fares higher across the entire industry, hitting the very passengers Spirit was built to serve.
