According to a media release by Volkswagen, the ARVW was a concept car that was built to be the most aerodynamic diesel powered car ever. It was so aerodynamic that its small 6 cylinder 177 hp engine was enough to carry it up to speeds of 225 MPH or 362 KPH.
The Volkswagen ARVW (1980) was only 33 inches tall and 43.3 inches wide. It was built from an aluminum frame under a fiberglass-and-carbon body by Aerodynamic Research Volkswagen (ARVW). The engine featured was a merely 2.4L turbocharged, in-line six cylinder diesel engine.
The diesel powered concept car became the sleekest car ever, producing a drag coefficient of only 0.15.
Within a single drive, the ARVW set two consecutive world records. In the first hour, it reached 221 MPH, and then gradually reached speeds of 225 MPH. Such timeless classics are proof that the most daring passion projects back then could still rival the technology of today.
