CNN reports that the US government has allowed Anthropic to release its Claude Mythos 5 model to select companies and federal agencies, after Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick wrote to the company on June 26 confirming that “appropriate safeguards are in place to permit certain trusted partners to access the Claude Mythos 5 Model.”

The Partial Clearance Ends a Two-Week Standoff That Forced Anthropic to Disable Both Mythos 5 and Fable 5 Even for Its Own Foreign National Employees Working in the United States

On June 12, the government ordered Anthropic to block all foreign national access to Mythos 5 and its consumer-grade sibling Fable 5, forcing the company to disable both models entirely, including for foreign national Anthropic employees working inside the US. The partial approval covers more than 100 organisations but remains silent on Fable 5’s return.

The White House grew concerned after learning Anthropic had granted access to a South Korean telecom firm believed to have ties to China. Anthropic co-founder Tom Brown has taken the lead in government negotiations, replacing CEO Dario Amodei in that role.

The DOD Previously Labelled Anthropic a Supply Chain Risk and Anthropic’s Lawsuit Against the Administration Remains Ongoing

Earlier this year the Department of Defense declared Anthropic a supply chain risk after negotiations over military use collapsed; a designation historically reserved for foreign adversaries. Anthropic sued the Trump administration to reverse the blacklisting and litigation is still ongoing. Discussions over Fable 5’s reinstatement are expected to continue this weekend.

The world’s most powerful cybersecurity AI is now being distributed by government permit. That sentence alone tells you how much the regulatory landscape has shifted.
