Pentagon Withdraws B-1, B-2 and B-52 Bombers From UK After Terror Arrests
The United States has withdrawn its B-1, B-2, and B-52 bombers from RAF Fairford in the United Kingdom following a series of terror-related arrests near the base, the Pentagon confirmed on October 4, 2026. CBS News
Five British nationals in their 20s from London were arrested on suspicion of explosives and terror offences near the Gloucestershire air base. Police discovered petrol in three vans linked to the suspects, though no explosives were found. A 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national was separately arrested in London on suspicion of plotting an attack. All suspects were subsequently released on bail.
The aircraft have been returned to their home stations in the continental United States. A Pentagon spokesperson maintained that US forces “remain ready to deliver precision global strike capabilities; including through operations that launch and recover from the continental United States anywhere, anytime.”
RAF Fairford has been used by American bombers to conduct strikes against Iran, giving the base significant strategic prominence. The withdrawal was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.
The move signals a notable, if temporary, shift in US forward-basing posture in Europe. Read our previous article on UK and US Military news here.
