World Bank Reclassifies Pakistan As It Removes The Nation From South Asia Category
According to The Thursday Times, it has been found that World Bank has ‘upgraded’ Pakistan to the MENA category and has removed it from the South Asia category starting from the fiscal year 2026. No major announcement took place. Rather, the institution’s own DataBank metadata glossary was updated, with Pakistan and Afghanistan now categorized into the MENA category.
Though, these changes come into effect for technical interpretation based on how economic outlooks and frameworks are conducted by the World Bank. Still, for Pakistan, this is a huge step which comes into effect at a critical and crucial time as it has become the centre for attention in the Gulf, becoming the most successful and powerful mediator in ensuring peace, negotiations and dialogue to prevail over war.
Pakistan has historically tried to move away from South Asian rivalries, in particularly with India, to explore the Gulf for trade and economic activities. Successful mediation and now inclusion in the MENA region will only strengthen and solidify its position amongst the Arabian and Gulf States and will further shift its identify away from the Indian subcontinent.
Currently, Pakistan has concluded its trade and economic agreements with countries like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE among other countries in the Middle East.
