According to DigWatch, Australian scientists at Monash University in Australia developed an unveiled a groundbreaking innovation in the field of Medical Technology. Dubbed as ‘Gennaris Bionic Vision System’, it is a bionic eye that is able to restore sight for millions of blind individuals.
The bionic eye is a compact camera worn by an individual which works in tandem with up to 11 tiny wireless implants placed on the brain’s surface. The implants stimulate brain cells with minute electrical pulses, allowing users to perceive basic shapes and outlines, offering a 100-degree field of view for a more natural visual experience.
The innovation has been in continuous development for nearly a decade with previous promising results shown in animal testing by scientists. Unlike traditional treatments, the system bypasses damaged optic nerves, directly sending visual signals to the brain’s vision centre. Now, the innovation is yet to become a mass-produced norm, allowing blind individuals to have their vision restored. Currently, the only way to achieve such a scale of medical and technological success, the bionic eye system needs to be cost effective and its feasibility needs to be attainable and realistic.
