According to an article published on ACS Publications, scientists have made a huge medical discovery. By using tin oxide (SnOx) and infrared light to selectively kill cancer cells, scientists have ensured that targeted therapies can be made safer as using tin oxide and infrared light reduces normal tissue damage while optimally killing cancer cells.
The method used falls under photothermal therapy in which light energy is converted into heat at the targeted site. The SnOx nanoflakes absorb near-infrared light efficiently acting as microscopic heaters. This heating disrupts the cancer cell’s membranes and proteins leading to cell death.
The effectiveness of nanotechnology used here points to increased advancement in selective cell therapy. In addition to this, using LED light instead of lasers would not only make selective cell therapy effective but also efficient with lower costs.
This can make selective cell therapy scalable in bigger hospitals.
