Petrol Falls Rs3.39 And HSD Falls Rs4.07 From August 5; Down From April Peaks Of Rs458.41 And Rs520.35 Respectively As Government Shifts To Daily OGRA Pricing Amid Ongoing Iran War
According to Dawn, the government reduced petrol prices by Rs3.39 per litre to Rs328.56 and high-speed diesel (HSD) by Rs4.07 per litre to Rs385.86, effective August 5, 2026. The government continues to levy Rs110 per litre in taxes on petrol and Rs96 per litre on HSD.
The reductions follow a dramatic war-driven price cycle. HSD peaked at Rs520.35 on April 3 before falling; petrol peaked at Rs458.41 on the same date. Both had begun rising from pre-war levels of Rs266 and Rs281 per litre respectively after the US-Iran war broke out on February 28.
Petroleum Minister Ali Pervaiz Malik announced that fuel prices will now be fixed on a daily basis by OGRA based on international market trends; a shift from the weekly revision system adopted in early March. The Pakistan Petroleum Dealers Association rejected the daily pricing mechanism and said it would consider a protest.
Petrol drives private transport, two-wheelers and rickshaws. HSD powers heavy transport, power plants and generators; monthly sales of 700,000 to 800,000 tonnes combined. Changes in both touch every income level in Pakistan.
