Major Incident Declared Near RAF Fairford as Men Arrested on Explosives Offences
Counter-terrorism police are leading a major investigation after several men were arrested on suspicion of offences under the Explosives Act near RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire, UK, on September 27, 2026. BBC News
The incident prompted authorities to declare a major incident and evacuate residents from Whelford, a village adjacent to the base’s security perimeter. A temporary emergency shelter was set up at a nearby leisure centre, while British Army explosive ordnance disposal teams examined multiple vehicles in the area.
RAF Fairford; a strategically significant installation that hosts US Air Force operations including forward-deployed B-1B Lancer strategic bombers under Operation Epic Fury, raised its alert status to FPCON Delta, the highest threat level. Other US bases in the UK, including RAF Lakenheath and RAF Mildenhall, also implemented elevated security measures.
Gloucestershire Police stated: “A cordon is currently in place but we’d like to reassure people that we believe this incident is contained. We are working closely with our partners and are enacting the well-rehearsed plans we have in place.”
The investigation remains active. The base’s role as a premier US bomber forward operating location in Europe gives the incident significant geopolitical weight.
