The Peninsula Qatar reports that Qatar’s Public Works Authority Ashghal is actively implementing Phase 3 of its Flood Prevention Programme across North Doha as part of the Remaining Roads and Infrastructure Project, targeting approximately 51 rainwater accumulation spots across the municipalities of Doha, Al Daayen, and Al Rayyan.

Phase 3 Covers Al Gharrafa, Onaiza, Al Tarfa, Old Al Rayyan, Al Dafna, Bin Omran and Al Kheesa With Sustainable Drainage Infrastructure

Project Engineer Abdullah Shams confirmed the programme provides sustainable solutions to reduce rainwater accumulation and enhance drainage network readiness ahead of Qatar’s rainy season, covering major residential and commercial areas including Al Gharrafa, Onaiza, Al Tarfa, Old Al Rayyan, Al Dafna, Bin Omran, and Al Kheesa. The works are part of Ashghal’s broader mandate to develop infrastructure and improve quality of life for residents across Qatar.

The Flood Prevention Programme Follows Qatar’s Strategic Outfalls Project, One of the Largest Rainwater Drainage Initiatives in Doha’s History

Ashghal’s flood prevention work sits within a QR81 billion five-year infrastructure plan launched in 2025, which includes construction of strategic tunnels, pumping stations, and a Strategic Outfalls Project designed to drain rainwater across both the north and south of Doha with plans to reuse collected water for irrigation and cooling purposes.

Qatar’s rainy season is short, but its damage when drainage infrastructure is inadequate is serious. Phase 3 shows Ashghal is not waiting for the next downpour to find out.
