Saturn’s Moon Enceladus: Cassini Data Shows Both Poles Leak Heat, Keeping Hidden Ocean From Freezing
According to research from Oxford University, scientists analyzing NASA’s Cassini spacecraft data found that Saturn’s moon Enceladus loses heat from both poles, not just its famous southern geysers, suggesting its hidden ocean could stay liquid for billions of years.
Researchers led by Dr. Georgina Miles measured the north pole’s surface as roughly 7 Kelvin warmer than expected, indicating heat leaking from the subsurface ocean below. Combined with known southern heat loss, Enceladus releases about 54 gigawatts total, closely matching the 50 to 55 gigawatts predicted from Saturn’s tidal pull stretching and squeezing the moon. That balance keeps the ocean from freezing or overheating.
This matters because a stable energy budget over geological timescales is essential for life to potentially emerge, and Enceladus already has liquid water, organic molecules and the right chemistry.
“Enceladus is a key target in the search for life outside Earth,” Miles said, “and understanding the long-term availability of its energy is key to determining whether it can support life.”
