Germany, Spain and Italy Join The List Among Latest Countries To Reject Trump’s Plea To Send Warships To Strait Of Hormuz
As of March 17 2026, the number of countries to reject Trump’s plea to join forces to force open the Strait of Hormuz has increased. The latest addition being Germany, Spain and Italy.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated “We lack the mandate from the United Nations, the European Union, or NATO required under the Basic Law,” which meant that Germany could not join hands to support US efforts in forcing open the Strait of Hormuz.
In addition, he also explained that Israel and the US had not consulted Germany before starting the war and thus Germany is not compliant to send warships upon Trump’s orders.
This has been the narrative of the EU and other European and Western Countries as well as Prime Minister of UK and Prime Minister of Australia both are focused on their own national interests.
Trump responded with “Some are very enthusiastic about it, and some aren’t. Some are countries that we’ve helped for many, many years. We’ve protected them from horrible outside sources, and they weren’t that enthusiastic. And the level of enthusiasm matters to me,” as he chastised the lack of commitment shown by European allies in joining the war.
In addition to this, Trump has also criticised UK’s Prime Minister Starmer’s lack of response and delayed support towards Trump’s plea earlier on March 8th 2026 in his tweet saying “We don’t need people that join Wars after we’ve already won!”
