Scientists Discover How Proton Motion Can Greatly Influence Triple Energy Transfer In Advanced Materials

According to SciTechDaily, scientists have discovered a new way to move energy through advanced materials much faster and more efficiently than before. This new mechanism is being called Proton Shuttle-Assisted Triplet Energy Transfer (PS-TET).

In many high-tech materials (like solar cells or sensors), scientists need to move energy from one part of the material to another. This is often done using “triplets,” which are specific excited states of molecules. Normally, moving this energy is a slow or difficult process because it requires the right alignment and conditions.

The researchers found that they could speed up this energy transfer by using a proton (a tiny, positively charged particle) as a “shuttle.” When light hits the material, a proton jumps from one molecule to a nearby “shuttle” molecule. This is essentially teleportation done via quantum tunnelling.

Using quantum tunnelling will allow solar cells to capture more energy with less waste, create more sensitive sensors for biological tests thereby improving medical imaging as well as controlling light and energy with much higher precision thus allowing lasers to be more efficient.
