Latest World Happiness Index Revealed For 2026: Nordic Countries Top The List Once More While Costa Rica Makes A Surprise Inclusion In Top 5
According to The World Happiness Report, the latest happiness index rankings are out for 2026. As of today, four of the top five countries rated highest on the index are Nordic countries, namely, Finland, Iceland, Denmark and Sweden. The curious case of Costa Rica remains to be rooted in tradition and values as it makes a surprising entry into the top 5 rankings.
Costa Rica is the only non-European and South American country to make it into the top 5 of the World Happiness Index as it beats the giants such as Norway, US, Israel and other flourishing European countries.
Costa Rica is known for its slogan “Pura Vida” which translates to pure life. The nation adopts this culture which puts emphasis on tight family ties, social connections and low-stress lifestyle.
This social cohesion combined with high investment in education and healthcare, a stable democracy, and a deep commitment to environmental sustainability (renewable energy and conservation), creates a high quality of life which ultimately puts Costa Rica in the number 4 spot above Sweden in the World Happiness Index. This is Costa Rica’s highest ever ranking ever and the last time it ever surprised anyone was back in 2019 when it was ranked 12th.
