Talks In Switzerland: Vance Skips Burgenstock Trip As 60-Day Deal Clock Ticks
According to Reuters, Switzerland confirmed Friday’s planned US-Iran implementation talks at the Burgenstock resort near Lucerne have been postponed.
The meeting, with mediators Pakistan and Qatar also expected, was meant to begin executing the 14-point memorandum of understanding Trump and Iran’s president signed Wednesday to end the recent Middle East war and reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The White House said Vice President JD Vance is no longer travelling to Switzerland “as of now.” Under the agreement, a final deal must be reached within 60 days.
This pause lands amid real friction. Vance has criticized Israel’s offensive in Lebanon as obstructing negotiations, and Israeli strikes killed at least 16 people in southern Lebanon overnight. Iran’s Revolutionary Guard has reportedly set up covert cells in Iraq targeting Gulf states hosting American forces.
A postponed meeting is not a collapsed deal, but a 60-day clock does not pause for scheduling conflicts.
