According to NBC News, wildfires have torn through France’s Bordeaux region in what the country’s prime minister called an unprecedented fire season; burning an area four times the size of Paris, forcing 220,000 people from their homes and threatening one of the world’s most iconic wine-producing regions.
No vineyards have yet burned, and initial smoke testing showed negligible levels. However, the grapes are currently in veraison; the critical stage when they turn from green to red, making them most vulnerable to smoke taint. Initial testing shows “cold smoke” so far rather than “hot smoke,” which is the dangerous kind that penetrates the berries.
The threat arrives at the worst possible time for the industry. Bordeaux produces approximately 700 million bottles per year but has faced falling demand among younger drinkers, rising competition from abroad, Trump’s tariffs, and inflation that has squeezed consumption for several years. “Tourism was really the only dynamic part of the business that was still growing,” said Edouard le Grix de la Salle, whose Grand Verdus estate lies 35 kilometres from the fire front. “And now this comes along as a brake.”
“There is an ecological disaster, a human disaster, families have lost their homes because of the fire, and then there is an economic disaster,” one vineyard owner told NBC News.
