According to The News International, at least 94 people were injured and one woman was killed in separate incidents of celebratory aerial firing across Karachi during Pakistan’s Independence Day celebrations on August 14, 2026.
An Edhi Foundation spokesperson confirmed the injury toll at 94, comprising 10 women, 17 children and 59 men. The injured were taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, Civil Hospital and Abbasi Shaheed Hospital. Abbasi Shaheed received 24 patients, Jinnah Hospital 35, and Civil Hospital’s trauma centre treated 26. Firing incidents were reported from Lyari, Saddar, Korangi, Malir, Azizabad, North Nazimabad, Nazimabad, Gulbahar, Gulshan-e-Iqbal, Orangi Town, Jamshed Quarters and Defence.
Police arrested 30 suspects from Karachi’s eastern, western and central districts, recovering various weapons. In a separate incident at a hotel in Paposh Nagar’s Sarafa Bazaar, a woman died when a 9mm pistol with a round in its chamber was accidentally discharged by her cousin Imran, who was subsequently arrested.
Karachi has witnessed repeated casualties from celebratory firing during Independence Day festivities. In 2025, three were killed and 75 injured; in 2024, around 95 people were hurt in similar incidents. Authorities have repeatedly warned residents that bullets fired into the air can fall back and cause serious injury or death.
