According to Motor1 by Jeff Glucker, Hyundai is continuing a record sales trajectory from 2025 into 2026 while simultaneously developing a substantial range of new models; some refreshes of existing vehicles, others entirely new platforms and powertrains. The company’s product pipeline for 2026 and 2027 is its most diversified in recent memory, spanning compact EVs, extended-range hybrids, performance variants, and the earliest signals of a body-on-frame truck programme.

The Hyundai Elantra: cosmetic refresh with a performance tease. Hyundai’s popular compact sedan is due for a mid-cycle refresh. The update will not constitute a complete overhaul expect restyled front and rear fascias, updated lighting elements, and a revised interior layout incorporating the brand’s latest digital interface.

Powertrain options for the standard Elantra are expected to carry over, which is defensible given the current model’s competitive positioning in the compact sedan market. The more interesting question is whether the refresh introduces a new engine for the Elantra N performance variant.

Motor1 has previously reported on a next-generation Elantra N engine in development, and while the timing has not been confirmed, the mid-cycle update provides a logical window for its introduction. The Elantra N remains one of the most driver-focused, value-competitive performance sedans available, and a powertrain upgrade would sharpen its credentials against an increasingly competitive class.

The Hyundai Ioniq 3: 300 miles of range, but not for America. The Ioniq 3 is a compact electric hatchback offering more than 300 miles of range and respectable performance; precisely the product profile that the mainstream US EV market most needs and currently lacks.

It should, in theory, be exactly the kind of accessible EV that closes the gap between early adopters and fence-sitters. There is, however, a significant problem: Hyundai has not confirmed a US market launch for the Ioniq 3. This is a genuinely unusual strategic decision at a moment when EV demand in the US has softened but not collapsed, and when the most common consumer complaint about EVs remains range anxiety and affordability.

A sub-premium electric hatchback with over 300 miles of range and a competitive starting price represents a direct response to both objections. The absence of a US launch plan may reflect Hyundai’s cautious approach to a market that has been politically and economically volatile for EV manufacturers, or it may simply be a timing decision that could be reversed. Either way, Hyundai’s decision to develop the Ioniq 3 without a confirmed US rollout is the single most commercially puzzling element of its current model pipeline.

The Hyundai Kona: a full redesign coming for 2027. Hyundai paused Kona EV production for the 2026 model year after 2025 supply exceeded demand projections; an inventory management decision that effectively means 2026 Kona shoppers have a gap in the lineup to navigate.

The upside is that the pause makes room for something more compelling: Motor1 expects a comprehensively redesigned 2027 Kona with a tougher, more aggressive exterior stance. The new design philosophy aligns with what Hyundai has been signalling across its CUV, SUV, and truck segments; a shift toward boxier, more purposeful proportions influenced by the Crater concept.

Powertrain options for the 2027 Kona are expected to include a turbocharged 1.6-litre hybrid and an updated EV version, both featuring the automaker’s latest cabin technology. The exterior redesign is the most commercially significant element: the current Kona’s rounded, soft silhouette has been a relative point of weakness against competitors that have moved toward more angular, adventure-oriented aesthetics. A Crater-inspired redesign would address that directly.

The Hyundai Santa Fe EREV: the most consequential new powertrain in Hyundai’s 2026 pipeline. Hyundai has long spoken of developing an extended-range electric vehicle; an EREV and that ambition is now materialising in the form of the 2027 Santa Fe. The EREV powertrain is worth explaining clearly for readers unfamiliar with the architecture.

Unlike a standard hybrid that relies primarily on a combustion engine with an electric assist, and unlike a plug-in hybrid whose combustion engine can independently drive the wheels, an EREV is fundamentally an electric vehicle. The electric motors are the sole source of motive power. The battery is charged externally by plugging in, and internally by an onboard combustion engine that operates exclusively as a generator; it never directly drives the wheels.

The practical result is that the vehicle drives like an EV at all times, with none of the combustion engine’s vibration, gear noise, or efficiency compromises. But when the battery runs low, the generator automatically activates, extending the operational range significantly without requiring a charging stop.

A sufficiently depleted battery can be recovered by simply refuelling the generator’s fuel tank at any conventional petrol station. Motor1 reports the EREV Santa Fe should deliver a total driving range of approximately 560 miles; a figure that eliminates the most common objection to pure EV ownership without the driving compromises of a traditional hybrid. Think of the first-generation Chevrolet Volt’s architecture, scaled up to a mid-size family SUV.

The commercial timing is well-calibrated. EV adoption in the US has plateaued, but consumer resistance is specific: range anxiety, charging infrastructure uncertainty, and premium pricing. An EREV Santa Fe addresses all three simultaneously. It will be manufactured at Hyundai’s Georgia Metaplant, which has been receiving substantial investment and whose full production capacity has not yet been revealed; the EREV platform is almost certainly one of the products the expanded facility was designed to build.

The Hyundai Tucson: long overdue, finally coming for 2027. The Tucson has been one of Hyundai’s most consistent sellers for over two decades, and its current generation has remained competitive largely on value and reliability rather than design freshness.

The 2027 update will address that directly with a boxier exterior aesthetic that retains Hyundai’s familial design language; the parametric lighting signatures and geometric grille elements while adopting a more rugged, upright silhouette. Hybrid and plug-in hybrid options will carry over.

The more exciting rumour is a Tucson N performance variant with a 295-horsepower hybrid setup and standard all-wheel drive which, if confirmed, would make the Tucson N the most powerful hybrid in its class and one of the most directly appealing propositions in the compact SUV segment for driving enthusiasts who currently have very few options below the GV70.

The concerning news is that the 2027 Tucson may drop its combustion-only entry variant. For a model whose starting price accessibility has been a core competitive argument, removing the base non-electrified powertrain risks a significant jump in the price of entry. How Hyundai manages the price point on a hybrid-only Tucson lineup will determine whether the update expands the model’s market or simply shifts it upmarket.

Beyond 2027: the Boulder and the pickup truck. Motor1 notes that two of Hyundai’s most intriguing future vehicles; an SUV and a pickup truck both based on the body-on-frame Boulder concept, are not expected to arrive as 2027 model-year vehicles. The more realistic window is 2028 to 2030.

The Boulder concept, shown earlier this year, previewed a rugged, ladder-frame platform capable of underpinning both a traditional body-on-frame SUV and a pickup truck in the segment occupied by the Ford Ranger and Toyota Tacoma.

Hyundai has never sold a traditional truck in the US market; this programme would change that entirely. Whether the production model retains the Boulder concept’s boxy, utilitarian aesthetic or migrates toward the slightly more refined Crater concept remains an open question. Motor1 notes the Crater concept remains the more commercially appealing design.

The verdict. What emerges from Hyundai’s 2026-2027 pipeline is a company deliberately covering every segment of the electrification spectrum from the pure EV of the Ioniq 3, through the EREV architecture of the Santa Fe, to the hybrid and PHEV options for the Kona and Tucson.

The EREV Santa Fe is the most strategically significant product: if it delivers 560 miles of real-world range, drives like an EV, and prices within reach of mainstream family SUV buyers, it could become the most persuasive argument for electrification that Hyundai has ever made. The rest of the lineup is competent, well-timed, and commercially sound. The EREV Santa Fe is genuinely ambitious.
