OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Issues An Apology In The Aftermath Of The Attack On His Home In San Francisco, Dubbing It As Warranted Due To Rising AI Anxiety
According to Financial Express, Sam Altman has issued an apology after the controversial attack on his home in San Francisco as he has stated that despite the rapid societal changes, fears and anxieties regarding AI are warranted.
The controversial incident occurred on Friday morning which involved a 20 year old man throwing inflammable device at Altman’s home in San Francisco’s Russian Hill neighbourhood. The device ignited the exterior gate but caused only minimal damage and no injuries, as it reportedly bounced off the property.
Though the suspect fled on foot, he was caught and subsequently arrested an hour later near OpenAI’s headquarters, where he allegedly made threats to set the building on fire.
Though the actual motives are unknown, it is true that the attack seems targeted towards OpenAI which has prompted Sam Altman to issue an apology for the unprecedented risks that AI carry, in particularly how it is changing the job market and putting many at risk of losing their jobs in the near future.
In the case of Sam Altman though, the risk was further than just the threat of unemployment. At this time, OpenAI has been involved in yet another controversy regarding OpenAI and the AI industry, including debates over military applications of these AI model, with public polls showing concerns about AI risks outweighing benefits for many Americans.
As a result, Sam Altman stressed that technical safety measures alone are insufficient and called for new policy initiatives to strengthen society and manage emerging risks from the technology.
