An Impromptu Meeting Between Bank CEOs And Federal Officials In The Heart Of The US Has Taken Place As Anthropic’s Latest AI, Claude Mythos Is Considered Extremely Dangerous. Government Officials Believe Mythos Can Debilitate Fortune 100 Companies, Infiltrate National Defense Systems, And Take Down Huge Chunks Of The Internet
According to Morning Brew, Anthropic’s latest AI model, namely Claude Mythos which can detect cybersecurity flaws in operating systems and web browsers with exponentially greater efficiency and effectiveness compared to human counterpart is under scrutiny for its increasingly dangerous capability.
As per Bloomberg, Fed Chair Jerome Powell and Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent gathered the heads of Bank of America, Citigroup, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, and Wells Fargo on Tuesday after the limited rollout of Mythos. The emergency meeting came after the Trump administration’s increasingly suspicious attitude towards Claude Mythos.
While Mythos is intended to protect companies from backers, the Trump administration believes it can be used to attack the foundation of the US Financial System by targeting the world’s biggest banks.
For context, Anthropic’s Claude Mythos was distributed to around 40 organizations which included banks. The distribution was limited due to concerns of being too powerful for the public (a classic case of the elites hoarding the power for themselves). According to Axios: “Government Officials believe Mythos can debilitate Fortune 100 companies, infiltrate national defense systems, and take down huge chunks of the internet.”
Thus, Anthropic’s Claude Mythos is believed to be just as capable of causing harm as it is defending companies from potential hacker attacks. A security expert told Business Insider: “a team of humans can discover about 100 critical flaws with no immediate fixes per year, but Mythos can find “thousands.”” The exponential capability gives it the power to exponentially expose flaws in giant companies. If the information gets public and even if hackers do not take advantage, shares can take a major hit in the stock market as exposing sensitive information about the world’s top companies has overarching consequences.
